Lumbosacral Arthrodesis in Adult Complex SpineCURRENT SITUATION: Researchers at Washington University have reported that long fusions from the thoracic spine down to L5 and circumferential fusion may further promote subsequent L5-S1 disc degeneration. Sacral fixation is the most vulnerable segment of a long stabilization. Advanced L5-S1 DDD developed in 69% of deformity patients after long fusions to L5 with five to fifteen year follow-up.1 The below case study series from Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, Chief of the Scoliosis Service, Hospital for Special Surgery, discuss an emerging approach for fixation at L5-S1 at the base of long Deformity constructs. |
